How sustainable is Purrniture?

At Purrniture, our cat furniture is not just designed with your cat in mind, but also with a commitment to sustainability. Each piece is handcrafted with eco-friendly materials and practices that minimize environmental impact. But how exactly do we achieve this? In this article, we'll talk about the conception and crafting process of our cat furniture, highlighting the steps we take to ensure our products are as green and sustainable as possible.

The material used for our cat furniture

The frames of our cat furniture are crafted from repurposed lumber, giving new life to wood that might otherwise go to waste. Initially, our wood supply consisted of electrical reels or spools, 4x4s from old fencing, and tubes from paper companies. By utilizing these reclaimed materials, we not only reduce the demand for virgin resources but also minimize the environmental impact associated with deforestation and manufacturing. Additionally, the carpet used in our products comes from remnants that are too small to be useful as flooring. These carpet pieces, which suppliers would otherwise have to pay to recycle, are perfect for our needs, allowing us to reduce waste and provide a soft, durable surface for your cats to enjoy.

The Endless Supply of Surplus Materials

What began as a hobby quickly revealed an endless supply of surplus materials ideal for creating solid, well-made cat furniture. By using materials that would otherwise be discarded, we take advantage of resources that are both free and abundant. These materials, considered waste by other companies, provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution. This approach means we aren't producing anything new, significantly reducing our environmental footprint.

Cat furniture should be a jungle gym for cats, allowing them to get exercise and be the masters of their domain. The beauty of using electrical reels lies in their round shape, which is ergonomically perfect for cats that curl up when they sleep. Moreover, this round design lends a modern look to our furniture, making it a stylish addition to any home. In addition to their modern appearance, our designs also reflect the latest in carpet trends. By using carpet remnants, we stay current with today’s styles while promoting sustainability. This approach not only ensures that our furniture is fashionable but also aligns with our commitment to using materials that would otherwise go to waste.

Handcrafted with Precision

The importance of hand craftsmanship at Purrniture cannot be overstated. Each piece of furniture involves numerous steps, each requiring meticulous attention to detail. Our frames can contain as many as 20 different pieces of wood, demanding precision to ensure everything aligns perfectly. The carpet is cut by hand using patterns, and any misalignment in the frame would result in improper fitting. Upholstering, the most critical step, involves stapling the carpet into place with as many as 2500 staples for our largest piece, the Castle Royale. This process, akin to sewing but using a staple gun instead of a sewing machine, ensures the carpet is securely attached and durable.

Our commitment to durability means you won't have to frequently replace your cat furniture, which is not eco-friendly. By creating products that are built to last, we contribute to sustainability by reducing waste and the need for new resources. Moreover, if your Purrniture piece ever needs some upkeep, we offer reupholstering services to extend its life even further. This combination of sustainability and durability ensures that our cat furniture remains a long-lasting addition to your home.

By focusing on sustainable practices and high-quality craftsmanship, Purrniture creates cat furniture that is both eco-friendly and built to last. Our dedication to repurposing materials and attention to detail in the construction process results in products that are good for the environment and great for your cats.
